Profile General director NLnet bureau

NLnet Foundation is looking for a General Director (preferably full-time) with a 'commercial' talent to provide continuity to the organisation after a strategic reorientation. The director will be responsible for the (Amsterdam based) NLnet bureau, working on the day to day realisation of the NLnet vision and strategy. The main tasks of the bureau are:

  • maintaining and extending the NLnet network;

  • fundraising for projects from the bureau (including cofunding) and for making sponsored initiatives durable;

  • convince other actors to help support the goals of NLnet;

  • select and support (technical) projects from the Open Call and from NLnet investments;

  • maintaining the supporting processes of the foundation.

Characteristics of the ideal candidate are extravert, structured, able to motivate others, excellent communication skills and result oriented.

Tasks

The director is responsible for the daily affairs of running the NLnet activities. Guided by the Vision established by the board triannually, he or she creates annual plans and the accompanying budgets to be approved by the board. The director prepares the board meetings and attends these as secretary without voting rights to establish a clear communication. The director will be responsible for realisation, adjusting and further detailing the plans into clear operational objectives, with periodical reports to the board. At a peer level there is regular contact with the director of NLnet Labs.

In addition the director is expected to handle operational task such as coordination of projects, lead the participations and investments and business development.

Competences and capacities

  • communicates the NLnet policy and ideology externally and is Open Source driven;

  • can collaborate well with other organisations in the area of Open Source;

  • supervises the employees of the NLnet bureau;

  • knows Open Source developments, applications and organisations (academia, industry, government and communities) from his own experience;

  • is result oriented, flexible, entrepreneurial and internationally oriented;

  • excellent communication skills, both in writing as orally;

  • at least five years of experience in one or more NLnet areas of interest;

  • experience in operationally running an organisatino, outsourcing (technical) projects and managing collaboration;

  • preferably experience with managing startups;

  • experience with innovation and especially dissemination/deployment of open source initiatives;

Salary

Depending on age, educational background and experience a monthly salary of € 4.500 - € 7.000. Working conditions are according to the staff handbook and include a pension arrangement based on available premium with 2/3 contribution by the employer, commuting costs, at least 27 holidays per year, employer contribution for child care.
