Revealing the hidden potential of Open Food Facts taxonomies
Open Food Facts is a collaborative database containing data on close to 5 million food products from around the world, in open data. It contains multilingual taxonomies for e.g. food categories, ingredients, packaging, processing. This project brings the richness of the Open Food Facts multilingual taxonomies to scientific and app builders through the use of Simple Knowledge Organization System - a W3C recommendation designed for representation of thesauri, classification schemes, taxonomies, subject-heading systems, and other types of structured controlled vocabulary. This retains better data consistency, saves users from the trouble of ad hoc converting, and enabling new innovations. The project will bridge Open Food Facts with the semantic web, and in addition provide an easy to use, self-deployed, service to serve common use cases for applications dealing with food.
