libhyphen partitioner

Increased readability of ISO document formats and mobile web pages

The project develops a state-of-the-art line breaking method in LO/COOL Writer word processor and its portable libhyphen library, resulting in more readable documents and web pages. The new algorithm is the natural enhancement of the “smart” hyphenation of DTP software and office suites. In ISO ODT and DOCX documents, it minimizes the less readable hyphenation of compound words by preferring compound word boundaries within a custom word spacing range, i.e. without losing typographic quality. Limiting hyphenation only for splitting compound words, it can help to eliminate poor rags on mobile web, where the de facto standard is scrolling of the left-aligned text without hyphenation. This is a fundamental requirement for languages with an “unlimited” number of compound words, for example Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Latvian, Norwegian and Swedish, but it can be useful for English, too, especially on very narrow screen sizes of mobile web.
