TETRA BlueStation
Libre TETRA base station stack
TETRA is a mobile communications solution frequently relied upon in critical infrastructure and by emergency services. It provides voice and text services, but can also carry IP data to handheld and fixed radios. A previous grant helped deliver a proof-of-concept FOSS TETRA base station stack, BlueStation - which immediately gathered hundreds of enthousiasts upon release. This grant will elevate BlueStation from a proof-of-concept stack to a robust, practically usable base station stack. Lowering the price of a base station from tens of thousands to only about 200 euros worth of hardware, while keeping the ecosystem free from vendor lock-in and licensing issues, the project will give new purpose to large amounts of near e-waste handheld TETRA radios, which may then easily be used for resilient wireless communication - be it through a single stand-alone BlueStation cell, or through a network of base stations interconnected through the internet.
