Portable standalone LoRa messaging device

LoRa radio networks make use of open UHF ISM bands to transmit small data packets carried over long distances through a mesh topology. They are emerging worldwide and provide solutions for decentralized, off-grid communication. This project aims to develop an easy to use and affordable yet durable handheld messaging device that allows people to join the mesh and communicate freely. The portable device makes use of simple, rather low-tech hardware but is very capable for a user-friendly messaging experience. In contrast to widespread ways of communication like the internet or cellular networks, it leverages the use of LoRa technology as a low-power solution that doesn’t rely on centralized, complex systems. The device intends to combine well-designed electronics, user-friendly software and a clever housing design that can be manufactured by both, low-volume additive manufacturing as well as serial mass production. This allows people with and without technical background to exchange messages and stay in touch in everyday life as well as in different scenarios of crises.
