Inventaire split

Standalone Wikidata-federated Bibliographic Database

Inventaire is a libre tool and social network to list and share books, helping individuals and collectives to form networks of librarians (Social Core). This is built on top of an open contributive bibliographic database extending Wikidata (Entities Core). Until recently, those two cores have been hosted on a unique, centralized, instance: inventaire.io.  During the previous grant, we started decentralizing the Social Core by making it possible to run an instance while reusing entities from another instance (a.k.a. federated entities mode). This validated the viability of having both cores running separately, giving us the opportunity for a great clarification, which will be the aim of new grant project: splitting Inventaire into two coupled but distinct projects, with their own code base, own domain name, own identity, etc. This rearchitecturing will strenghten the decentralization of the Social Core, thank to the reduced complexity, with all instances integrating entities in the same way. This will also open opportunities for reusing the Entities Core codebase alone, for other use cases than bibliographic data.
