BookBrainz Open Data & Discovery Initiative
Crowd-sourced curation of information about written publications
BookBrainz is a community led open-source database serving information about every single book, magazine, journal and other publication ever written. All the data is published under a Creative Commons CC0 license, allowing everything to be consumed and used for any use case. Its goal is to become the standard open-source source of truth for publications and offer long-lasting identifiers that can be used for third parties, as well as a user-friendly web interface to simplify entering and curating publication information, and allowing users to have their virtual library, reviews and recommendations.
This project will strengthen BookBrainz’s core infrastructure to expand public access to high-quality metadata. It will improve and modernize the search infrastructure, ensuring long-term scalability and reduced infrastructure costs. The project will enable importing records from trusted public sources, including European national libraries, and introduce community-driven recommendations to improve discovery. Finally, the project will provide incremental data dumps and replication feeds to support (offline) reuse by researchers, libraries, and third parties.
