About the webinar

Open hardware hacker bunnie is working on IRIS (Infra-Red, In-Situ) inspection of silicon, a project to facilitate the non-destructive verification of silicon chips. The goal of the project is to give people a tangible reason to trust their chips. In this 90-minute tech talk he gave an explanation of the goal of the project and how it works. In the last 30 minutes he answered questions from the participants.

Chip inspection often requires removing or even destroying the chip. With IRIS bunnie has developed a method using infrared light to inspect chips without having to unmount them. The aim of the project is to create a set of techniques for the hardware world that fill the analogous role of "digital signature verification" used on software packages: a ubiquitous method to establish trust in an artifact, after it has been delivered to the user.

About Andrew "bunnie" Huang

Bunnie is an open source hardware hacker, and an activist for digital rights and freedoms. He is well-known for many projects such as Betrusted, a secure and private communications system that gives users an evidence-based reason to believe that private matters are kept private, and the Safecast Geiger Counter Reference Design, an open sensor network that can aggregate trustable, source-neutral radiation monitoring data. He is the author of The Hardware Hacker, Hacking the Xbox (made freely available in honor of Aaron Swartz), and The Essential Guide to Electronics in Shenzhen. He documents his ongoing projects on his website bunniestudios.com.

NGI0 funding

Bunnie's project IRIS received funding from NGI0 Entrust. NGI0 Entrust is made possible with financial support from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet programme, under the aegis of DG Communications Networks, Content and Technology.
